Hearts of Space was one of the original radio shows to introduce different genres of music. Starting in 1973, Stephen Hill started Hearts of Space in San Francisco. By 1983, Hearts of Space made it into the public radio world and continued gaining popularity. This show became popular for the unique and underestimated music styles, and is now listened to on the radio and through different online options.
Both ambient and New Age music fall under the electronica genre, the main genre featured on Hearts of Space.
Ambient music was one of the first styles featured on Hearts of Space; the genre became popular in the early 1970s. Ambient sounds a bit like elevator music, but has a way of capturing the listener and drawing them into the tranquil beat. Brian Eno is the creator the term ambient, and released Ambient 1: Music of Airports in 1978. There are various styles such as: ambient dub, organic ambient and dark ambient style to name a few. Many famous artists use the ambient style in their albums such as Pink Floyd and Miles Davis, and are all featured on Hearts of Space.
The term New Age was derived during the 1960s due to the new beliefs of the time of the European and American musicians. It is known to be very melodic and instrumental and is a form of ambient music. This music became popular in the 1980s, and was known for its unique and different style than the mainstream music being performed at the time. Nowadays, it has become popular to use vocals in New Age music. This type of music is greatly listened to by many people in California.
Advancements in technology are a big factor the Hearts of Space success. When the possibility of steamlining was made available in the 1990s, Hearts of Space was able to connect with listeners all over the world. The show became extremely popular in the following years and is still a popular radio show today, being listened through radio and online.
