Humankind has always been fascinated with the cosmos, as is evident in both past and present studies in astronomy and space. As advances in technology bring modern civilization closer to the possibility of interplanetary space exploration, questions and theories abound about the Earth's closest neighboring planet, Mars. The mysteries surrounding the red planet have continued to influence films, books and even popular music.
One of the latest bands to be creatively influenced by Mars is the English rock band Muse.
Muse is considered a progressive rock band and is comprised of three members: Matt Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard. Muse's recent and most critically acclaimed album is "Black Holes and Revelations." This album is a departure from the rock band's previous three albums which were labeled alternative rock. Instead, "Black Holes and Revelations" experiments with several different rock genres to create a new sub genre called new prog. The album is largely influenced by Matt Bellamy's interest in politics, space and conspiracy theories, especially those concerning the planet Mars and Cydonia.
Cydonia is a region on Mars that is famous for images captured in photographs taken by NASA spacecrafts. These images appear to depict monuments of a ruined city, including pyramids and a humanoid face known as the Face on Mars. Many people believe the images of Cydonia to be evidence of an ancient Martian civilization that NASA, in league with the U.S. Government, are trying to cover up. Muse alludes to this conspiracy theory in several songs on their album, including Exo-Politics and Knights of Cydonia. The album's artwork, also influenced by Mars, depicts four men seated around a table on the planet Mars, with the planet Earth orbiting in the distance.
Muse's album also touches upon other themes. Hit single releases "Starlight" and "Supermassive Black Hole" contain lyrics describing space travel, stars, the universe and black holes. Both "Starlight" and "Supermassive Black Hole" use space terminology as metaphors for love. Other songs such as "Take a Bow," "Soldier's Poem," and "Assassin" contain more of a political theme aimed on criticizing world leaders and supporting activism. Despite the album's eccentric themes, Muse was nominated for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize and won a Platinum Europe Award, the 2006 Q Award for Best Live Act, and MTV European Music Video Awards for Best Alternative and Best Live Act.
Since being released in July 2006, Muse's album has received both critical and financial success. Many popular music magazines, including NME, Rolling Stone and Blender, have given Muse favorable reviews. "Black Holes and Revelations" was even voted third on NME's Album of the Year list for 2006. Muse's album has already reached BPI double platinum status and, due to the band's acclaimed live performances, continues to sell.
Albert Einstein said "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science." It is the mysteries of the universe that continue to advance science, as well as the creativity of authors, film makers, and musicians such as Muse. As long as these mysteries remain unsolved, bands like Muse will continue to create innovative music that aims to reflect humanity's fascination with the unknown.
